Cool Balancer is intended for horses and ponies in light to medium work who require extra topline and condition. Cool Balancer is a ‘Non-Heating’ cereal-grain-free formula with low sugar and starch levels, as well as good quality protein to promote topline.

Cool Balancer is a low-cost feed balancer for horses that do not require a hoof supplement and are not working hard, competing, or stressed.
Feeding Cool Balancer, like Comprehensive Feed Balancer, increases the amount of nutrients a horse can extract from his feed (p.8). The amount of concentrate that must be fed can be reduced because the horse can extract more nutrients from forage. This aids digestion and is a more natural method of feeding, resulting in a more relaxed horse.
Because Cool Balancer is high in nutrients, the forage-to-concentrate ratio improves as well. It is fed in very small amounts, such as 500g (about two TopSpec measurements) per day for a typical 15.2hh middleweight weighing 500kg. A small amount of hard feed obviously leaves more digestive space for forage than a large amount of hard feed.
Because it contains very little sugar and starch and is fed in small amounts, the possibility of excess sugars and starch overflowing from the foregut to the hindgut and causing a microbial imbalance leading to acidic conditions is virtually eliminated. As a result, the chances of a horse misbehaving due to ‘acid guts’ are reduced.
Cool Balancer contains a high concentration of B vitamins, some of which have long been thought to be beneficial for their relaxing properties. It also contains beneficial levels of anti-oxidants, which can help to neutralise the effects of stress in a horse and thus help him relax.
Magnesium is included at 0.6%, providing 3g of magnesium per day to a 500kg horse’s diet. This may help some horses concentrate better, especially when they are stressed.
Feed Regime
Typical feed regime for a 15.2hh horse in light-medium work:-
Grazing plus ad-lib meadow hay or haylage.
Plus two feeds per day – each containing:
- 250g TopSpec Cool Balancer (for condition, muscle development, topline and general health).
- 300g TopChop Lite (‘Non-Heating’ unmolassed alfalfa/ straw chop).
- Up to 1.5kg TopSpec CoolCondition Cubes (‘Non-Heating’ conditioning cubes, quantity adjusted according to condition).
- Access to a salt lick 24/7.
- Additives if required; Electrolytes, 10:10 Joint Support, Calmer or Digestive Aid.
